Types of Hardwood We Offer

When you're looking for hardwood options, Carpet Barn has a variety of types of hardwood. Our flooring specialists are here to help you find the perfect option depending on your desired look, your budget, and the room's traffic patterns.

Solid
Hardwood is 100% solid wood. Most solid hardwood flooring needs to be nailed or stapled to a wooden subfloor. It is susceptible to shrinking and expanding from excessive moisture and extreme temperature changes. This makes it an unsuitable choice for installation directly over concrete, and we don't usually recommend solid wood for below-grade use.

Engineered
Engineered hardwood is also 100% wood. It is manufactured by permanently bonding together multiple layers of solid wood in a cross-ply construction. Its cross-ply construction allows installation above or below grade and is usually the only type of hardwood recommended for below-grade use. It's glued, stapled, or floated over an existing floor, and it resists expansion and contraction caused by temperature and humidity changes.

Selecting the Right Hardwood for Your Home

Wood is a cozy and practical flooring option that never goes out of style. Hardwood is a long-lasting option, making it a great investment for your home. With over 1,000 species of wood, cork, and bamboo floors available, there are more wood flooring fashions to choose from than ever before. There are a few things to consider when choosing the right hardwood floor for your home.

Species

There are many species of hardwood, each with its own benefits depending on your desired floor look, color, and durability. Not all wood species are equally hard, so make sure you choose a wood that suits your needs. For example, if your floor is in a high-traffic area or a heavily used room, you should consider hard, durable options, such as oak, maple, or ash.

Other options include traditional oak, which has more variations in grain and shade, and maple, which is cleaner and more understated. There are also more exotic species, such as tigerwood, Brazilian cherry, and Santos mahogany, which ass have a unique combination of origin, color, and surface characteristics. Ask our experts to show you the appropriate hardwood species for your lifestyle.

Color

Hardwood color options vary from almost white to black, with tans, browns, grays, and reds in between. Medium colors offer a cozy and rich vibe, while dark colors are more modern, chic, and expensive looking. Lighter colors create a spacious interior with a neutral design point.

It's important to consider how your species choice also impacts color, as some options are more naturally dark, such as cherry and walnut, whereas light, less expensive flooring can be stained to meet any desired look. Remember that it's better to create contrast between your flooring, walls, and furniture than to have everything blend into one.

Width

Hardwood flooring is generally described by board width. For example, a strip is less than 3” wide, and planks are 3” or wider. The width of individual boards dramatically influences the look of your floor. Strips make a room look bigger, while planks have a more rustic feel. Keep in mind that wide widths will complement a large room but could overwhelm a small area.
